Back to School

Students are now back in school and summer is coming to an end. We are excited to get started with the brainstorming phase of our Life as a Scientist program! Rise Up is embedded within the student’s curriculum and will walk them through what it’s like to work and live as a professional research scientist. This process empowers students to think creatively, pitch ideas, work in teams, overcome obstacles and troubleshoot, and develop new writing and presenting skills. We believe these are tools that are more relevant in today’s evolving economy and useful in any job setting.

Traditional science education has revolved around a consistent process: read the assigned textbook, do the experiment, record the results you found,  and conclude with expected results. If the experiment fails, you fail. This protocol is outdated and ineffective. It does not reflect the process of research science or the world around us. We choose to upend this system by allowing students to come up with their own experimental ideas, write grant proposals, receive "notice of awards" or NOAs, carry out experiments in research teams, troubleshoot and revise their approaches, present their results, and publish in a scientific journal - acting as a professional scientist from start to finish.

By targeting school that are underfunded in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, we hope to bring equity to science education by providing opportunities and serving students from historically excluded communities. Our end goal is to equilibrate the power structures in science and increase the diversity of thought, experience, and representation in science careers.

Thank you for being on this journey with us!

Lincoln-West published authors!

Journal release

On August 21st we hosted a journal release party at Lincoln West School of Science and Health! Students received copies of the Journal of Young Scientists and were announced as newly published authors! This was the culmination of a year of hard work and it was amazing to see the students relish in the moment. They celebrated with Rise Up volunteers, school leadership, fellow students, polaroid shots, and lots of sugar!

You can read the 2024 edition for free now! If you’d like to receive your own copy, please make a donation of your choosing and send us a message!
